Special Exhibition on St Francis of Assisi at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Kolkata

Special Exhibition on St Francis of Assisi at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Kolkata

Jan 18, 2022

17 January 2022, Kolkata: One of the oldest cathedrals of Kolkata, The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, Burrabazar, founded on 1799 will install reliefs of St. Francis of Assisi which was put up as an exhibition during Xmas eve and inaugurated by Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee in the presence of Archbishop of Kolkata, Thomas D’Souza, Pro-Vicar of The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, the Police Commissioner, Mr Soumen Mitra, Industrialist, Promode Kumar Agarwal, Dr Ralf Heckner, Swiss Ambassador in India, Mr Umesh Chowdhary, Swiss Honorary Consul in Kolkata, Mr Subrata Ganguly of creative design firm Church Art and other dignitaries.

The pictorial displays have been conceptualised and created by Kolkata-based creative design firm Church Art and depicts the life of St. Francis of Assisi – the Patron Saint of Environment and the originator of the tradition of cribs. The reliefs would be installed in the Cathedral premises to inspire and motivate people to love and protect Mother Earth.

“This year we observed a Green Christmas in Kolkata to spread environmental awareness and practice in daily life the conservation of nature and its resources,” said Fr Franklin Menezes, Pro-Vicar of The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, Burrabazar, Kolkata.

A crib set, often described as a `nativity scene’, was also on display at the Cathedral. A crib, is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. The origin of the Christmas Crib or Manger or Nativity scene is often first ascribed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who, in 1223 AD, celebrated the `Feast of the Nativity’ in a new way that led to a new devotional practice popular even today.

Nativity scenes exhibit figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and Joseph. Other characters from the nativity story such as shepherds, the Magi, and angels may be displayed near the manger. Distinctive nativity scenes and traditions have been created around the world and are displayed during the Christmas season in churches, homes, shopping malls, and other venues, and occasionally on public places and in public buildings.

The Vatican has displayed a scene in St. Peter’s Square near its Christmas tree since 1982 and the Pope has for many years blessed the mangers of children assembled in St. Peter’s Square for a special ceremony. In July 2015, the first ever crib set depicting Jesus’ birth from India, designed by Kolkata-based creative firm Church Art, was added to the International Nativity Museum of Bethlehem’s collection of 223 nativity representations from over 93 countries. Church Art has installed various art work across India and abroad based on Church and Biblical themes in line with the canon law.

The International Nativity Museum in Bethlehem, a UNESCO Heritage Site, is currently located close to the Church of Bethlehem which is considered to be the spot where Jesus was born. Local lore passed down from ancient times holds that the three travellers or Magi who were guided by a star had passed through this path where the International Nativity Museum now stands.

History tells us that St. Francis of Assisi was inspired by his visit to the Holy Land in 1219 where he had been shown Jesus’ traditional birthplace. It was in 1223 that the first crèche was celebrated in the woods of Greccio near Assisi, on Christmas Eve. St. Francis’ idea of bringing Bethlehem into one’s own town spread quickly all over the Christian world, and soon after the death of Francis in 1226 there were Christmas cribs in churches and homes. The home crib became popular in Catholic Europe after 1600, owing, it is said, to the efforts of the Capuchins.

India to come up with it’s own Swadeshi Size chart – INDIA SIZE

India to come up with it’s own Swadeshi Size chart – INDIA SIZE

Nov 16, 2021

Buying branded clothes could be cumbersome as certain brands follow the UK size while others follow the USA size as the body frame of Indian men and women vary from their conterparts in the UK and the US. A specific size of one brand could vary from the specific size of the other brand in apparels. Usually the consumer compromises on the fit of his shirt or a pant while buying the branded clothes.

Among several problems, a  common example is that of the size of neck of Indian males which vary from their counterparts in the West. Indian males tend to have slight thicker neck as compared to the Western male of his category.

This anomaly won’t be experienced by customers anymore as India is poised to come out with its own size chart – INDIA SIZE that will usher in a drastic change in the Indian Garment industry. To counter this problem at the grass-root level, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India has initiated a massive national sizing survey to create an anthropometric database of measurements for Indians, which is a true representative of the entire Indian population.

After having completed the sizing process in New Delhi, it is being carried out with full steam now in Mumbai by NIFT having completed in two malls – Orion mall and Inorbit Mall. Currently they are rapidly executing the process in R-City Mall, Ghatkopar in this city. INDIA SIZE is expected to roll out sometime later next year.

The survey is being carried since July 2021 by support of the Design Smith Pvt. Ltd. The monumental project approved by the Government of India and supported by industry consortium CMAI entails measuring more than 25000 (Twenty-Five Thousand) people in the age group of 15- 65 years in six different cities located in six regions of India i.e. New Delhi (North), Mumbai (West), Chennai (South), Hyderabad (Centre), Kolkata (East) and Shillong (North-East) using non-contact human safe 3D body scanning technology.

Inauguration of Delhi Leg took place at Select Citywalk in the presence of Secretary Textiles (MoT) Upendra Prasad Singh, DG NIFT Mr Shantmanu and AS & FA (MoT)Shashi Ranjan Kumar.

Girish Wankhede – Gandhiji had the foresight that Hindi language would keep our nation united

Girish Wankhede – Gandhiji had the foresight that Hindi language would keep our nation united

Oct 23, 2021

One of the most interesting events held on this Gandhi Jayanti was an informative and educative – ‘Gandhi aur Hindi’ that was organized by Vishwa Hindi Academy and Wankhede Review and Analysis. This insightful event, a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi was held on 2nd October 2021 at a banquet hall in Oshiwara in Mumbai. Though it was held in the afternoon, what was so encouraging that it was attended by Bollywood heavyweights like Rohini Hattangadi who was the chief guest, Kavita Sheth, Vinay Shukla and Girish Wankhede who spoke about their experiences as regards to Hindi language.

Rohini Hattangadi recalled that she was just 27 years old when she played Kasturba’s character in Sir Richard Attenborough’s film GANDHI (1982) hence was able to share some insights about the father of our nation.

Kavita Sheth sang the devotional hymn Vaishnava Jana To which was rendered as a bhajan in Gandhiji’s Sabarmati Ashram and then she followed it up by singing a  Ghazal.

Vinay Shukla, the writer of Dabangg observed that usage of proper Hindi is of vital importance in any Bollywood film, noting that Gandhiji’s influence in the usage of our national language particularly helped the freedom fight struggle.

Keshav Rai, head of Vishwa Hindi Academy flawlessly anchored the event, while Girish Wankhede of Wankhede Review and Analysis mentioned, “Though being a Gujarati, Mahatma Gandhi had learnt and mastered the Hindi language during those difficult times. After graduating in law from England and after returning from South Africa, Gandhiji’s first big movement was organized in Champaran in Uttar Pradesh that is a Hindi belt, hence he had to learn proper Hindi and be proficient in the language which he felt that for keeping a nation united, we need one language that everybody can understand. Gandhiji felt, “Rashtrabhasha ke bina, rashtra goonga hai” (Without a national language, the nation doesn’t have a voice).

This was followed by a very interesting single act play ‘Daastan E Mahatma’ that was based on Gandhiji’s life that was directed by Mujeeb Khan, A 20 minutes play remembering Gandhi and Hindi. The significance of this play was that the anchor spoke about Gandhiji’s upbringing in first person and threw insights in the life and philosophy of this great man.

Noted writer late Munshi Premchand was so inspired by Gandhiji’s love for Hindi that he became a part of the freedom struggle, added Wankhede.
