Activists and party workers have accused Municipal Comissioner of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC), D Gangatharan, of misuse of power and outraging women’s modesty on duty.
Rita Sawariya, corporator of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA), alleged that she was moved out of the Commissioner’s cabin. “He spoke in a rash manner to me and called a security guard to lead me out of the cabin. I was denied entry into the cabin after that,” she said.
The corporator said she had gone over to Commissioner to submit a letter regarding COVID-19 assistance. “But he refused to entertain me and said he will work on his own terms. He also said it was his decision whether or not to speak with me,” Sawariya said.
BVA partymen had earlier also alleged that the Municipal Commissioner had showed apathy in handling the COVID-19 pandemic crisis which led to rising cases in the district.
The Municipal Commissioner has been accused of not paying attention to quarantined patients and supplying essentials to the ones in need.

In the past, we’ve conducted fundraisers for calamities across the country including in Gujarat, Rajasthan et al to survive drought. Mukkti has also raised funds for Kargil war veterans. During Coronavirus pandemic, we are trying to contribute to the welfare of the less fortunate,” she says.
Shedding light to the initiatives undertaken by Team Mukkti, Smita reveals that her son Rahul and his wife Aditi started an initiative in association with the ASBB Foundation.
Mukkti Foundation with Association Of Social Beyond Boundaries, is distributing food to the Police, stranded labourers, BMC workers, beggars, sex workers in areas across Mumbai including Andheri, Vile Parle, Khar, Santa Cruz, Bandra, Mahim, Dadar, Mahalaxmi, Grant Road and Kamathirpura ensuring they are fed! “We’d like to thank Sagar Jain, Raj and the entire team of ASBB Foundation. Without them it would have not been possible to reach out to so many people at times. Also, with the increase in the number of cases we have come across among doctors, nurses, paramedics among other medical staff getting infected, we are sponsoring face shields and providing protective gear to several hospitals,” shares Smita while adding, “We have distributed more than 2,000 face shields so far! We are also helping the farmers by sourcing organic fruits and vegetables to people across different areas.” So far, Mukkti Foundation has distributed over 8,500 meals to people across the city!
Mukkti Foundation has raised funds through crowd-funding as well as donors who believe in the initative. Collectively, it has helped with the food distribution drive to aid dabbawalas, shares Aaishvary Thackeray, Smita Thackeray’s younger son. He contributed for the food grains for over 100 dabbawalas! In an aim to provide groceries to the needy families, trust members joined hands with several other groups for this noble cause and volunteered wholeheartedly in the hour of need during this pandemic. Together, they successfully served 5,000 plus needy families around Mumbai, Thane & nearby suburbs such as Boisar, Dahanu and Alibaug.

The Indian wing of US-based solar solutions provider Suntuity Group, Suntuity Renewable Energy India (REI), has said the Coronavirus pandemic is a wake-up call for the Government of India and it should focus more on giving tax benefits to people than subsidies. “If you really want to try to incentivise people to go solar than you have to incentivise them by giving tax benefits,” said Imaan Javan, Director of operations at Suntuity REI.
Javan further said when people see tax benefits in something, they tend to move towards that direction to save up on taxes. “Solar used to have subsidies across the board but now subsidies are only limited to residential projects. And these projects are not that large in numbers. I am not saying to give them subsidies, but you can give them some tax breaks or something similar,” she said, adding, “Like in the USA they have 26% flat ITC (investment tax credit) across the entire country (which was 30% for a long time earlier) no matter which state you are in and they have different benefits for the state and benefits from the states. Over here we don’t see it like that.”
The Government of India aims to reach a renewable energy capacity of 175 GW by 2022 and then 500 GW after that. “In order to be able to achieve that, the government needs to determine how they would help people. Tax benefits would be beneficial for the common man as well as the industry,” Javan said.
